Our Strategy

Peru Opportunity Fund supports projects and programs often through multi-year commitments that are designed to leverage the Fund’s assets to the fullest extent possible. POF also utilizes challenge and matching funds as well as program related loans to form mutual partnerships and optimal outcomes. The Fund seeks to maximize its impact by focusing on projects that support systemic change in the quality of life for rural communities, and works closely with grantees to help them achieve their objectives.

Peru Opportunity Fund has three core initiatives and provides funding and program loans for projects in the following thematic areas:

Agriculture and Livestock Management

Approximately nine percent of Peru’s 27 million people work in the agriculture sector and live in extreme poverty on $2 a day or less. A great majority of Peru's Farmers reliey on small-scale agriculture and many cannot produce enough food to eat, let alone generate a surplus income. Working with partners, the Fund's Agriculture and Livestock Management initiative is investing across the entire agricultural value chain, from improved seeds, soil, and crops to market access and related research. The Fund focuses on small farm households seeking to help protect their natural environment and larger farm cooperatives needing pre-trade financing or capital for infrastructure development. Over time, the initiative seeks to achieve sustainable solutions that can help Peru’s rural farmers move out of poverty.

Job Training/Business Development

Peru's economy has enjoyed stable growth in recent years, but underemployment remains widespread. Peru Opportunity Fund believes that at the core of providing economic opportunities lies the development of the necessary technical, business, and financial skills. The Fund seeks to shape Peru’s economic future by funding organizations that encourage and strengthen rural businesses and provide a solid foundation of technical training, thus mitigating the need for urban migration from rural communities.

 Access to Housing

Peru Opportunity Fund believes that building homes does more than put a roof over someone’s head. Clean, decent, stable housing contributes to family stability, dignity, and pride along with physical safety and health. For lower income families, home ownership is an important means of wealth accumulation in the form of equity and forced savings resulting from mortgage repayment. Additionally, housing construction creates job opportunities and stimulates the creation of small businesses. Affordable housing is accomplished through sustainable public and private partnerships that seek to design affordable housing that attract economic development and contribute to a thriving community.

Peru Opportunity Fund seeks to protect Peru’s environment by enhancing rural livelihoods. The Fund’s projects seek to strengthen the links between communities, livelihoods, and natural resources.
