We believe that the work of our grantees can contribute to a broader knowledge base. We also believe it is important for organizations working in similar areas to be able to learn about and connect with one another.

The following is a list of the projects we have funded. Each project includes a brief description of its work and where available, information on results obtained as well as lessons learned. 


Aid to Artisans

2006-2007 Artisan Businesses of Cajamarca
Worked with artisans in Cajamarca to improve their business and technical skills and help them identify new market opportunities for their products.

2001 Humanitarian Relief
Donation for aid following the earthquake in Arequipa in January 2001.

Ashoka

2007-2010 Fellowship Stipend of Ricardo Soto
Stipend for Ricardo Soto to further his development of Centro de Capacitación J.M. Arguedianos and its revolving school fund loans in Huancavelica.
2005-2008 Search and Selection of Social Entrepreneurs in Rural Peru
Funding the search and selection of Ashoka Fellows specifically in rural areas of Peru.

Asociación Andina Cusichaca

2010 Market Study of Andean Grains and Institutional Planning
Planning grant for a market study on Andean grains cultivated on terrace systems in Apurímac and Ayacucho. Funds also used to develop organizational and financial strategies of Asociación Andina Cusichaca.

Calvert Social Investment Foundation Inc.

2006-2010 Community Investment Note Targeting Latin America Challenge Investment Fund
Provided microfinancing funds to Caja Municipal Trujillo, Edyficar, Caja Municipal Huancayo, Caja Municipal Tacna, Crear Arequipa, Crear Tacna, Confianza, Pro Mujer.

CARE

2007-2008 Thornless Artichokes - Value Chain Development
Installed greenhouse to grow artichoke seedlings in Ancash, closer to where the artichokes are grown, to provide a ready supply and decrease losses to farmers.
2005-2006 Support to Rural Entrepreneurs in Puno, Peru
Assisted 1120 families in Puno with technology, marketing, and general training in livestock and handicrafts, increasing profits by $275,000, an average of $245 per family.

Centro de Capacitación J.M. Arguedianos

2008-2009 Revolving Educational Loan Fund
Education outreach to 18 districts in Huancavelica. A total of 538 new students were enrolled in school in the districts; 480 took advantage of the revolving loan to help with purchasing school supplies and uniforms.

Ciudad Saludable

2008-2009 Implementation of Solid Waste Management Program in Pucallpa, Peru
Created solid waste management programs in Ucayali. The project increased incomes, improved sanitation and involved many women in creation of small businesses and associations.

Comite de Productores Agrarios de la Provincia de Maynas (COPAPMA)

2005-2006 Forest Conservation Through Ecotourism
Assisted by COPAPMA, the residents of San Rafael in Iquitos, Loreto formed a community-based ecotourism committee (COPETUR) with the goal of learning to manage their own tourism project and to perserve their jungle community.

Coprodeli Foundation

2008 Housing Construction
One hundred homes were constucted for families in Ica who lost their homes in the August 2007 earthquake.

Council on Foundations

2008-2010 Peru country note-U.S. International Grantmaking Project (USIG)
A Peru Country Note was researched, written, and posted to the USIG website through ICNL (International Center for Not-for-Profit Law). The goal of the note is to help provide foundations and other private donors with information about equivalency determination in Peru.

2007-2008 Strengthening Rural Ecological Agro Industry
Training for organic apple growers in Lima region and development of a processing plant to create four new apple products for local sale.

El Centro Educativo Ocupacional Betania de Villa Nazaret (CEO Betania)

2005-2006 The Livestock Breeding Microlending Program of CEO Betania
The purpose of the grant was was to provide microloans for livestock breeding program in Chulucanas, Piura.

Grupo GEA

2008-2010 Income generation activities in the lower Lurín Valley
Project provided training to 25 small businesses in the Lurín Valley of Lima to develop their products and markets.

Heifer International

2006-2007 Passing the Gift
A matching grant for funds raised by students of Renbrook School in West Hartford, Connecticut for Heifer International's “passing the gift” program.

Minga Perú

2008-2010 Increasing Income Generation Activities Using Radio Technology: Expanding to Ten New Communities
Expanded the Minga Perú model to ten additional Loreto communities, selecting and training promoters to educate community members, training farmers on agroforstry and camu-camu production, and training artisans in new skills and marketing.
2005-2006 General Operating Support
“Promoters” shared knowledge on agroforestry farms and coops for poultry raising, artisans were trained on craft production.  Minga produced and broadcast the radio program “Bienvenida Salud” to the entire Loreto region.
2004-2005 General Operating Support
Grant made through American Jewish World Service for Minga Peru to continue with its educational workshops and innovative radio program in Loreto and to sustain and expand income-generating opportunities for women.
2003-2004 General Operating Support
Grant for general operating support to Minga Perú in Loreto, made through EmPower.

NESsT

2008-2010 The NESsT Venture Fund (Fondo Nido): Supporting Social Enterprise Development in Peru
NESsT's Venture Fund works with nonprofits throughout Peru on designing and developing revenue-generating enterprises by providing training, technical assistance and operating income. Eight revenue-generating enterprises were launched.

Nexos Voluntarios

2008-2010 Income Generation Project for Recovered Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis Patients
Implemented a program in Trujillo to provide employment opportunities for patients recovering from multi-drug resistant TB through development of small enterprises and training for re-entry to workforce.  27 small business owners formed or strengthened their businesses; 21 former TB patients received training to reenter the workforce.

Pro Mujer, Inc.

2005-2010 Loan for Pro Mujer Peru
Revolving loan fund for Pro Mujer’s microfinance operation in Tacna. From 2006 to 2010, disbursements increased from $6M to $16.6M and membership from 35,900 to 56,600.
2002-2007 Loan for Pro Mujer Peru
Revolving loan fund for Pro Mujer in Puno. From 2002 to 2007, membership grew from 14,300 to 40,000 and disbursements from $1.31M to $8.48M.

2005-2006 General Operating Support
Grant for operating support to Pro Mujer's Peru Tacna office.
2004-2006 Integrated Microlending Software
A matching grant to fund for a more robust management information system for Pro Mujer in Puno.
2003-2004 Health Programs Within Community Banks
Allowed Pro Mujer to design and implement a multiple-year project to strengthen the health programs it offers to the women of the community banks in Tacna affiliated with ProMujer.
2002-2003 Operating Support
Operating support to Pro Mujer's Peru Tacna office.

Rainforest Alliance, Inc.

2008-2009 Enhanced Livelihoods in Northern Peru Through Sustainable Coffee Cultivation
Improved livelihoods for Peruvian coffee farmers in Amazonas, Cajamarca, Lambayeque, Piura, and San Martín. Small-holders increased their incomes through price premiums paid for their coffee, received training in sustainability and best practices, and accessed international coffee buyers.  34,000 hectares of land were certified as a result of this grant.

Root Capital, Inc.

2009-2010 Pre-Trade Export Financing
Loan used primarily for pre-trade credit for coffee producers throughout Peru.
2007-2010 Regional Office in Lima
An operating grant used to develop Root Capital's new office in Lima, Peru. With this new office, loans can be more rapidly disbursed and more easily monitored. The Peru portfolio grew from $6M in 2006 to $22M in 2009.
2008-2009 Trade Finance
Loan used primarily for pre-trade credit for coffee producers throughout Peru, including PERUNOR and CENFROCAFE.

Save the Children

2006-2007 General Operating
An operating grant through World Affairs Council, directed to Save the Children's work in Ancash, Peru.

Strategies for International Development (SID)

2007-2008 Expanding Livestock Businesses in Rural Solidarity Groups
Provided 168 small livestock business loans totaling $80,100 to 143 families in Puno.

TechnoServe, Inc.

2008-2011 Increasing Opportunities for the Majority Through Business Plan Competitions
Two rounds of business plan competitions in Cajamarca, Ica and Lima; 38 plans were selected and entrepreneurs worked with business coaches to polish their plans and to help them find funding sources. Of these, 20 received awards and were given seed money from the project.  By the close of the project, 56 enterprises were operating with sales.
2006-2008 Business Capacity Development for Agricultural and Agroindustrial Sectors
Provided business development services (technical, managerial, networking) to 32 small and medium sized businesses in agriculture/agroindustry of the Cajamarca region.

Tecsup

2009-2010 Soil Conservation Laboratory
A soil analysis laboratory was constructed on the Trujillo campus, used in student education and to provide soil analysis services to area agrobusiness and small producers.
2008-2009 Student Scholarships
Provide merit-based financial support for students to complete their studies at TecSup's Arequipa and Trujillo campuses. In 2008, 13 full scholarships and four partial (50%) were awarded.
2007-2008 Computer Lab
Grant for purchase of 25 computers, monitors, software, projector, speakers for Tecsup laboratory in Trujillo.
2006-2007 Student Scholarships
Provide merit-based financial support for students to complete their studies at TecSup's Arequipa campus by offering 15 full scholarships and 10 partial (50%) scholarships in 2007.
2005-2006 Student Scholarships
Provide merit-based financial support for students to complete their studies at TecSup's Arequipa campus by offering 11 full scholarships and 19 partial (50%) scholarships in 2006.
2004-2005 Student Scholarships
Provide merit-based financial support for students to complete their studies at TecSup's Arequipa campus by offering nine full scholarships and 25 partial (50%) scholarships in 2005.
